Consumer Units

An electrical consumer unit, commonly referred to as a fuse box or distribution board, is a crucial component in an electrical system that distributes electricity to various circuits within a building while providing protection from electrical faults, such as overloads and short circuits. Contact us to discuss installing consumer units for your home or business.

Assessment and Planning

  • We evaluate the electrical requirements of the building, taking into account the number of circuits, the type of appliances and equipment, and the expected load demands.
  • We determine the location for the consumer unit, ensuring it is easily accessible and complies with local regulations.

Selecting the Consumer Unit

  • We choose a suitable consumer unit that matches the requirements of the installation, taking into account factors like the number of ways (circuit breakers), type of circuit protection (e.g., MCBs, RCDs), and enclosure size.

Disconnect the Power

  • We ensure the power supply to the building is disconnected to prevent electrical hazards during installation.

Remove the Existing Consumer Unit

  • If there is an existing consumer unit, it needs to be safely removed and disconnected from the electrical system.

Install the New Consumer Unit

  • We mount the new consumer unit securely to the chosen location on a wall, typically at eye level or slightly higher for easy access.
  • We connect the incoming mains supply cables (live, neutral, and earth) to the appropriate terminals in the consumer unit.

Install Circuit Protection Devices

  • We install the appropriate circuit protection devices (e.g., miniature circuit breakers - MCBs, and residual current devices - RCDs) in the consumer unit to protect individual circuits.
  • We ensure the correct rating and type of MCBs and RCDs are used for different circuits.

Connect Circuits

  • Connect the outgoing cables from each circuit to the corresponding MCBs in the consumer unit.
  • Label each circuit to identify its purpose (e.g., lighting, power, kitchen, bathroom).

Wiring and Cable Management

  • We route and secure the wiring neatly within the consumer unit, ensuring there are no loose wires or excessive slack.
  • We use cable ties, cable clips, and proper cable management techniques to maintain an organized and safe installation.

Earth Bonding

  • We connect the earth cables from circuits to the appropriate earth bar or terminal within the consumer unit.
  • We ensure proper bonding to protect against electrical faults.

Testing and Inspection

  • We perform comprehensive testing and inspections, including continuity checks, insulation resistance tests, and functional tests on all circuit protection devices.
  • We verify that the RCDs (if present) trip within the specified time under test conditions.
  • We conduct a thorough inspection to ensure compliance with electrical regulations and safety standards.

Power Restoration

  • Once the installation is deemed safe and compliant, the power supply can be reconnected to the building.

Certification

  • We provide the building owner or occupant with the necessary certification and documentation, including an Electrical Installation Certificate or similar document, which verifies the safe and compliant installation.

Electrical consumer unit installations should be carried out by qualified and licensed electricians like EP Electrical who are familiar with local electrical regulations and safety standards. Regular maintenance and periodic inspections are essential to ensure the continued safety and proper functioning of the electrical installation. Contact us today to arrange for us to provide you with a quote for carrying out a consumer unit installation for your home or business.
